Unpopular Maine Law Headed to Repeal

The Maine law that tracks every student by social security number may be headed for repeal. We reported on the new law in last months ID Theft Alert. Since then 14 cities and towns voted to recommend that parents not give out their information. Other school districts are sending home letters that warn parents of the dangers of giving out social security numbers.

The laws author says the complaints are unwarranted and just a ploy to keep schools from being measured. I say if the goal is student assessment then just assign each student a unique student number. Every time an organization says this is too hard they manage to find a way.
