If you live in Charleston it is likely that your private information is being handled by convicted criminals. That is because Charleston County and the City of Charleston use inmates to handle their document shredding.
They say it saves money but that doesn’t pass the smell test. The point of shredding is because the information is sensitive and shouldn’t pass into the wrong hands. By using inmates they are handing it over directly to the people who would use it for crime. The director says it is safer than a commercial shredding service but that isn’t possible — a shredding service only uses employees who have passed a background check.
