When you think about your identity, what do you think of? Probably not how easy it is for someone else to get their hands on right? Not only is identity theft prevalent, but it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. It’s actually quite the opposite. As our technology increases, so do the identity thieves skills. It is actually easier to steal someone’s identity from the internet than it is from someone’s mail. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t absolutely be destroying all paper records before you throw them away, but you also want to make sure that you are handling your business online in the most secure ways possible. You want to make sure that any site you are on is legitimate and not a fraudulent site. If it looks weird, it most likely is.
One of the biggest mistakes that people make when it comes to their protection is using the same password for everything. I understand that you have twenty different places that you go online and it can be hard to remember them all, and writing them all down isn’t that much safer, but you really want to keep everything as separate as possible. At the very least make sure that your email password is the hardest to crack, and is different from all of your other log in passwords. This is because if someone gets access to your email then they can access just about any other thing that you do online, because when you forget your password for something (or are trying to get into someone else’s account), you can just send it to your email from that site. Keep yourself safe, because at the end of the day the only person who cares about keeping your identity safe, is you!
