100 Million involved in Data Leaks

According to the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse there have been more than 100 million identities exposed via data breaches over the last two years. Although this is an alarming number it is still important to remember that data breach is not the same as stolen data. Most of this information was simply lost to the dustbin of time.

How much is a lost laptop worth?

The cost of losing a laptop continues to grow. Last week Ameriprise Financial Services Inc. settled a probe with Massachusetts Secretary of State William F. Galvin for $25,000 over a lost laptop. The laptop contained personal information for 70,000 brokers and 130,000 customers.

The bigger question of when corporate america will learn to stop allowing personal data on laptops. We know Boeing hasn't learned yet.

20 year old identity theft case

According to a criminal report in Lyon County Texas a woman is the victim of identity theft 20 years in the making. The victim believes her information was stolen with her purse in 1985 when she was only 8 years old. She became aware of the identity theft when the IRS tried to collect for income she never received.

The identity was being used by an illegal immigrant to get a job. She claims to have purchased the information in 1997.

Although this may be a true story it seems a bit strange that an 8 year old is carrying her own social security card.
