HIPAA Shredding Violation in Woodstock

Dr. Kenneth Healey was an Ob-Gyn in Woodstock but recently shut down his practice. The problem is that instead of shredding all the personal information that HIPAA requires it was left in a dumpster. It was discovered and reported to the police and Channel 2. They were unable to contact the doctor for comment.

Scavenger Finds Personal Records in Shelbyville

Chris Adams’ son scavenges for metal in dumpster to make some money. When he was looking behind the dumpster at Murphy’s Gas Station in Shelbyville, Indiana he made a great discovery — metal file cabinets. The problem is they were filled with personal records of employees. He gave the records to his dad who notified the police and WISH TV.

Now the gas station will pay a large fine instead of just hiring a Shelbyville Shredding Service.

Hidding Instead of Shredding

The Thai Cafe had a box of sensitive information from past employees.  Since it is a $150,00o fine to dump the information in the trash they knew they needed to have it shredded. This is where it becomes unclear.

The box turned up in a dumpster behind a school. It was found because so many people dig through the dumpster that the school makes sure nothing important gets left for thieves. They notified the local news.

The owner of the Thai Cafe said they contracted with someone to destroy it. I don’t know if they tried to hide it in the schools dumpster or just left the box with someone who didn’t shred.

Any reputable shredding service will provide you with a certificate of destruction. This lets you know the job was done correctly.

Here are some good Indianapolis shredding services.
