Corporate Espionage and Shredding

I have written about corporate espionage when a company doesn’t shred but this is a new twist.

While working at General Motors, Yu Chin and his wife Shannon Du of Troy Michigan hatched a plan to steal information about the companies hybrid and sell it to a Chinese company. Shannon Du worked for the companies hybrid division and copied files onto thumb drives.

The couple realized that they were caught and tried to dispose of the evidence in a dumpster. The problem is they just used a home shredder and the the documents were put back together. [article]

I do like the irony of corporate espionage being caught because they didn’t use a shredding service.

Recruiter Needs a Shredding Service

Dozens of original birth certificates, social security cards and high school diplomas were discovered in a dumpster behind the the Armed Forces Recruiting Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. The documents were turned over to channel 12 news.

The Recruiting Center said they were cleaning out a desk and made a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes but preventing this one is very easy. Provide a locked bin in the office for all paperwork. Everything in the bin should be shredded. This prevents any mistakes and the paper ends up recycled instead of the landfill.
