Documents Found at Recycling Center

The Georgia Office of Consumer Affairs is investigating a number of boxes uncovered at the Smyrna Recycling Center. The boxes contained personal information, including W-2 forms and bankruptcy files. The boxes were piled five or six feet deep in a 10-by-20-foot dumpster. [report]

It is bad when you have the bad PR of being on the news for not shredding sensitive information. It is worse when the police are involved. That is when $35,000 fines start coming down. If you don’t have the money to pay the fine then it might be time to call your friendly shredder.

How Old is Your Shredding?

Pricing for a shredding service is based on the volume (or weight) of paper to be shredded. One of the best parts of quoting a job are the answers you ask them how much they need destroyed.

At least half the time the answer comes back with something like “seven years worth.” The problem with the answer is it gets you no closer to a volume. What GM produces in seven years is nothing like what an office of 10 people can generate in the same time. A much better answer is the number of boxes or file cabinets worth of files for shredding. This will get you a more accurate quote.

Personal Information in a Macy’s Dumpster

Is it safe to throw any office papers away? The downtown Macy’s in St Louis must be asking that question today. Last fall they made the news for leaving personal information in a dumpster that was found blowing down the street. They went though the apologies and promises to do better.

Today more personal information was found in their dumpster. They said it was only one piece but it is impossible to know how much that should be shredded isn’t. Now they say the solution is just lids for their trash cans.

This is a good example of why so many document destruction program cover the shredding of every piece of paper. If one piece of paper can cause so much damage to a companies reputation it isn’t worth the risk
