Your computer's hard drive can contain more sensitive data than a room full of file boxes. Electronic information is already covered by the HIPAA and FACTA privacy laws. Many people buy used computers for the purpose of taking information off the hard drives.

When you retire your computers you need to make sure the data is properly destroyed. Formatting the drive is ineffective. Special software can wipe the data on your hard drive but are slow and require you to start up every computer to wipe them.
