Man Pleads Guilty in Largest ID Theft Ring

Albert Gonzalez, 28, of Miami has plead guilty to 20 felony charges for stealing over 130 million credit card numbers. The thefts were at Heartland Payment Systems and retailers like OfficeMax Barnes & Noble and TJ Maxx that we have reported on in the past. 

He now faces up to 25 years in prison, and must hand back more than $1.65 million. Sentencing is set for December 8th.

Facebook Privacy Hole

If you are on Facebook you may have a privacy hole.  When your friends use applications they system shares your information.  To prevent this Go to Privacy > Applications, and click the Settings tab and uncheck all the boxes.

Panel Approves EHR Privacy Standards

The Health IT Standards Committee has approved a set of standards for the privacy of Electronic Health Records (EHR).  The standards help clarify what must be done by vendors and health care providers to protect personal patient data.

The new standards are to be adopted by 2011 and meet all the requirements of HIPAA and HITECH.  There is also a second round of more stringent requirements to meet by 2013.

Woman Catches her Identity Thief

A woman in Seattle became aware that someone had stolen her identity when she started getting bills for store credit cards she had never opened.  After doing some research she was able to see some surveillance tape of the thief.

Then one day while at her job as a clerk at J.C. Penny store she looked up to she the thief trying to open a new credit account.  She notified her boss who was able to get good footage.  The thief and four of her friends have been caught and are now facing charges.

This is when someone has to say what a small world it is.
