ID Theft Victim Wins Suit Against Credit Bureau

A federal jury awarded a Northern Virginia woman $351,000 in damages from a major credit reporting agency after its failure to remove debts that resulted from an identity theft incident, reports the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The suit was initiated after unsuccessfully trying to get debts that had been erroneously listed on her credit file removed. The debts resulted in her credit score being lowered considerably. Creditors from the unauthorized credit accounts opened by the worker were turned over to collection agencies that aggressively pursued the victim.

Identity Theft Techniques

We were hired by a private college to assess the security of its network. After completing numerous tests for vulnerabilities in the primary systems, we started looking at the Internet sites for the various departments and schools within the college. We found a major flaw in the alumni site, so we asked for permission to exploit it. The college agreed, as long as we agreed to stop our attack before any of its alumni were actually robbed. We began the exploit immediately.

Bank To Pay $50 Million For Buying Personal Data

A bank has been ordered to pay a $50 million settlement for buying more than 650,000 names and addresses from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

From 2000 to 2003, Fidelity purchased data containing personal information of hundreds of thousands of drivers living in Palm Beach, as well as Martin and Broward counties for only $5,656, according to papers filed in Kehoe v. Fidelity Federal Bank and Trust. The bank sought the information for car loan solicitations, according to papers filed in the class-action lawsuit.
