More than 10,000 Australian computers have been infected by a trojan virus - invisible to most anti-virus software - that is transmitting their owners' private details to identity thieves.
To protect yourself from this type of threat you should never surf the web as your computer's administrator. Only use the administrator account when you need to load new software or updates.

In a follow up to a previous story; fashion model Beverly Peele, who pleaded no contest to an identity theft charge, was sentenced Tuesday to three years probation, 100 hours of Caltrans work and 200 hours of community service.
Superior Court Judge Lloyd Nash also ordered Peele to pay $3,912.14 to the victim and $900 in restitution to American Express, and gave her credit for six days she had already served in county jail, said Deputy District Attorney Annette Peterson.

Here is a story about Senator Harry Reid being a victim of credit card fraud. However, CNN called the crime identity theft. It is the politics page but shouldn't an editor catch this?
Identity theft is the when you use someone's information without their consent to create new accounts in their name. Using another person's credit card number is just credit card fraud. Credit card fruad is easily remedied with a call to the credit card company and a new number. Identity theft causes more extensive damage to the victim.
