Javelin Strategy Release 2010 Survey

Over the last few years, Javelin Strategy & Research has conducted a survey on identity theft. They just released the results for 2010.
 
The number of cases of identity theft rose in 2009 to their highest levels ever reported. The fastest growing category comes from "new accounts fraud." These cases are when a new account for credit is set up with another persons information. These are harder to detect because they only show up on a credit report.

LifeLock Fined $12 Million

The FTC and LifeLock, Inc. have agreed to pay $11 million to the FTC and $1 million to a group of 35 state attorneys general to settle charges that the company's claims of providing 100-percent protection against identity theft were false.

In addition to the $12 million settlement, LifeLock are prohibited from making deceptive claims and they are required to better safeguard customers' personal information. [press release]
Identity Theft May Be Sign of Bigger Problem

Everyone is aware of using your identity to steal money. But that is only one way a stolen identity may be used to hurt you. Your identity may be used to commit other crimes or just given to the police when a criminal is arrested. [story]
Three Charged for Credit Card Fraud

The LA County Sheriff's Department and FBI have broken up an credit card theft ring that stole $2 million. The three set up devices to steal credit card numbers from gas pumps around Los Angeles. [Story]

Whenever you swipe your card make sure to inspect the machine. Make sure there is nothing looks suspicious. If so find another ATM or go into the gas station.
