Identity Theft and Tax Time

IRS logo
This is the time of year when more sensitive information is being sent to everyone. All tax forms include your full name, address and social security number. Just one of these letters could be enough to open an account in your name. Here are some simple steps.

  • If you moved last year then notify anyone sending you tax documents of your new address
  • Take in mail immediately if it is not locked.
  • If you go on vacation hold your mail at the post office.
  • If you share a mailbox make sure you get all of your mail.
  • Make a list of everyone sending you tax forms and check them off as they come in. Missing ones could be a warning sign.
The IRS is starting a pilot program to allow paper documents to have redacted social security numbers.  Unfortunately it only applies to 1098s and 1099s at this time. [article]
Blackhawks Legend Victim of Identity Theft

If you are a hockey fan, or a Wayne's World fan, you are familiar with Stan Mikita. Someone added online checking to his account and stole 100,000 from the hockey legend and his wife. The one way to prevent this is to check your accounts regularly online. [story]
FTC to look at Privacy in the Cloud

More and more data is moving into the cloud. The question remains of who is in charge of the data. The host of the service or the owner of the data? And exactly who owns data in the cloud. These are not easy questions as there are not established definitions. In the meantime every person and business needs to be aware of how their information is stored when they do not own the server. Identity Theft and the Census

The 2010 census is underway. Every house will receive a survey by mail in the next few months. If not returned a census worker will go to the home to collect the data. Be aware that no form asks for personally identifiable information.  If they are asking for social security numbers or other personally identifiable information then you have an impostor. The 10 census questions are available online.
