Long Running Identity Theft
Here are two stories of identity theft that went on for decades. Clifton Goodenough and Patrick Guest had their identities stolen 15 years ago and 19 years ago respectively. The thieves have used their identities for years to defraud the IRS, get credit, and avoid the law.
These stories highlight how a stolen identity isn't just a one time problem. Once it has been taken it can be used by the same person until they are caught or resold to another thief. Make sure you are taking the basic steps to protect yourself.

Data Breach Notification Laws
Three bills are making their way through the Senate concerning data breach notification laws. The Judiciary Committee has approved the bills on party line voting. The goal is to set a national standard instead of the current system of 47 different state laws. To muddy the waters even more, the Commerce Committee might soon have a bill of their own. At this point it doesn't look like any of the bills have the bipartisan support needed to pass the Senate.
